Yellow-billed oxpeckers prefer thinner coat animals such as buffalo and rhinoceros, while red-billed oxpeckers like thicker coat animals like giraffe and antelope. It is estimated, that they will eat 400 ticks a day, or 150 thousand ticks in its life time. They get lunch, while grooming the giraffe. However, their main food source may be blood, and not ticks, so they pick at scabs to get their food, without having to clean the animal.
