Herring are number 3 on The Most Extreme Loudmouths. They live in the largest schools in the world. When they release a stream of bubbles, they produce a noise. They make a noise called fast repetitive tick by emitting gas from their bottom. FRT last between one and seven seconds and are produced at such a low frequency, that scientists needed specialized equipment to hear them. Each FRT may be small, but they're extremely loud. The noised produced is equivalent to a jet at takeoff. Scientists think that FRT are used for social contact to prevent the school scattering or to scare predators away.
